In a thrilling display of skill and strategy, 20-year-old Grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov has claimed his fifth victory at the ongoing Candidates Tournament, solidifying his position at the top of the leaderboard with an impressive score of 5½ out of 6. The Uzbek prodigy delivered the only decisive result of the round, extending his lead to a formidable point-and-a-half.
Sindarov’s closest competitor, GM Fabiano Caruana, faced off against GM Andrey Esipenko but struggled to find his footing. Caruana, who had previously relied on his early Ng1-f3 and g2-g3 setup, found himself unable to exert any real pressure, ultimately settling for a draw. Despite being at +2 after six games—a score that would typically be celebrated—Caruana now finds himself trailing Sindarov, highlighting the fierce competition in this year’s tournament.

“Before the tournament, if someone had told me I would be at +2 after six games, I would have been thrilled,” Caruana remarked. “But seeing Sindarov’s performance puts things into perspective.”
With the halfway mark still ahead, Sindarov appears unstoppable, but the tournament is far from over. As the rounds progress, the chess community eagerly anticipates how the competition will unfold.
In the women’s section, a dramatic shift in standings has emerged. GMs Zhu Jiner, Anna Muzychuk, and Kateryna Lagno entered the round tied for first with three points each. However, Muzychuk seized the opportunity to take the lead with a decisive win over Zhu, while Lagno faced a rollercoaster match against GM Vaishali Rameshbabu, ultimately suffering a loss.

Muzychuk now stands at the top with 4 out of 6 points, but the competition remains tight, with five players just a point behind her. The intensity of the women’s section promises an exciting finish as the tournament progresses.

As the Candidates Tournament continues, chess enthusiasts around the world are glued to their screens, eager to see if Sindarov can maintain his lead and if Muzychuk can fend off her challengers. With so much at stake, every move counts in this high-stakes battle for chess supremacy.
