Exciting Start to Grenke Chess Freestyle Open: No Upsets on Top Boards in Round One

The Grenke Chess Freestyle Open kicked off with round one seeing no upsets on the top boards. Despite some close calls, super-GMs like Fabiano Caruana and Levon Aronian managed to outpace their opponents with large time advantages. Round two promises more difficult pairings, starting at 4:00 a.m. ET, followed by round three on the same day at 10:00 a.m. ET.

With 2,996 players descending on the Karlsruhe Convention Center in Germany, this event is the world’s largest over-the-board chess festival. The new addition of the Freestyle Chess tournament has brought excitement, with players navigating a brand new starting position in every round.

The competition is fierce, with the top 10 players by rating including Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, and Levon Aronian. The winner of the Freestyle Open will earn a spot in the next event in Las Vegas in July, along with monetary prizes.

Round one saw Carlsen and Niemann securing wins, with some underdogs putting up a strong fight against higher-rated opponents. The action will continue with two rounds per day for the rest of the tournament, promising intense battles on the chessboard.

Fans can tune in to watch the tournament unfold and witness the excitement of top-level chess in the Freestyle Chess format. The event offers a prize fund of €225,000 and the chance to win Freestyle Grand Slam Tour points, making it a must-watch for chess enthusiasts.
