Carlsen Laments Blunders After Round 8 Defeat to Praggnanandhaa in Norway Chess 2026: ‘Unbelievably Stupid, Frustrating’

Carlsen’s Frustration Grows After Second Defeat to Praggnanandhaa in Norway Chess 2026

Stavanger, Norway – World number one Magnus Carlsen expressed deep frustration following his unexpected defeat to Indian grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa in Round 8 of the Norway Chess 2026 tournament. This loss marks the second time Praggnanandhaa has bested Carlsen in the competition, raising questions about the reigning champion’s form.

In a gripping match that lasted 50 moves, Praggnanandhaa, playing with the black pieces, showcased his tactical prowess, leaving Carlsen’s title aspirations hanging by a thread. The 20-year-old Indian prodigy had previously defeated Carlsen in the third round, making history as the first player in nearly two decades to achieve this feat twice in a single tournament.

Carlsen, visibly disappointed, reflected on his performance, stating, “All the thoughts I had about this position an hour ago turned out to be wrong. It’s just unbelievably stupid.” He lamented missing a critical detail regarding his opponent’s bishop, which had remained inactive for much of the game but suddenly became a decisive factor. “It’s very frustrating, because I felt like I had done a good job of defending myself there,” he added.

Praggnanandhaa’s Historic Achievement

Praggnanandhaa’s back-to-back victories over Carlsen have placed him in an exclusive club of players who have managed to defeat the world champion twice in the same tournament. The last player to accomplish this was the legendary Viswanathan Anand at the Linates International Chess Tournament in 2007.

Currently, Praggnanandhaa sits in contention for the championship with 12 points, trailing behind second-placed Alireza Firouzja (13 points) and leader Wesley So, who has amassed 14 points after a dramatic Armageddon win. With only two rounds remaining, the competition is heating up, and all eyes will be on the final matches as the race for the title intensifies.

As Carlsen grapples with his recent setbacks, the chess world watches closely to see if he can rebound in the remaining rounds of this prestigious tournament. The stakes are high, and the pressure is mounting for the reigning champion as he seeks to reclaim his dominance on the board.
