Magnus Carlsen Kicks Off Grenke Chess Freestyle Open with a Flawless Victory

Karlsruhe, Germany – The excitement is palpable at the Karlsruhe Convention Center as the Grenke Chess Freestyle Open officially commenced on Thursday evening, with reigning champion Magnus Carlsen once again showcasing his unmatched prowess. The world-renowned grandmaster, who dominated last year’s tournament with a perfect score of 9/9, began this year’s edition with another impressive win, setting the tone for what promises to be an exhilarating competition.

This year’s Grenke Chess Festival has set a new record, attracting over 3,500 participants from around the globe, making it the largest open chess tournament in history. The event not only features a Freestyle Open but also a classical tournament, allowing players to switch formats before round five while carrying their points forward.

In the opening round, while most matches went as expected, a notable upset occurred when Chess960 specialist GM Levon Aronian was held to a draw by Poland’s CM Aleksander Kumala. Meanwhile, India’s FM Sreyas Payyappat made headlines by defeating the higher-rated GM Nikita Vitiugov, marking a significant achievement for the young player.

The tournament is not just about glory; it also offers substantial rewards. The winner of the A-Open will qualify for the FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship 2027, while the top three female players will secure spots in the FIDE Freestyle Women’s Chess World Championship 2026. With a staggering prize fund exceeding 200,000 euros, the stakes are higher than ever.

The atmosphere in Karlsruhe is electric, with chess enthusiasts and top players mingling in the packed venue. The tournament features a diverse array of talent, including the likes of Ian Nepomniachtchi, Levon Aronian, and rising stars like Nihal Sarin and Vincent Keymer.

As the tournament unfolds, players will face two rounds each day through Monday, with the next round set to begin at 4:00 a.m. ET / 10:00 CET / 1:30 p.m. IST on Friday. Spectators can look forward to thrilling matches as the world’s best chess minds compete for supremacy.

In a symbolic gesture, Wolfgang Grenke, the tournament’s namesake and main sponsor, made the first move for Carlsen, who faced WGM Narmin Khalafova from Azerbaijan. Carlsen’s aggressive opening play initially put him in a challenging position, but a critical mistake by Khalafova on move 20 allowed the world champion to seize control and secure victory.

As the tournament progresses, chess fans are eagerly anticipating more surprises and upsets, with the potential for history to be made in this landmark event. Stay tuned for updates as the Grenke Chess Freestyle Open continues to unfold, promising thrilling chess action and unforgettable moments.
