As March Madness captivates basketball fans across the nation, a different kind of competition is heating up in the world of collegiate chess. After a grueling seven-week round-robin season, six teams have emerged to vie for the championship title.
Spring 2026 Regular Season Standings
The Top Seeds: SLU and UTD
Defending champions St. Louis University (SLU) have secured the top seed in the playoffs, narrowly edging out the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). After suffering an early loss to UTD, SLU bounced back, winning their remaining matches to finish strong. UTD, despite a solid start, stumbled in a crucial match against SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRM), suffering an 11-5 defeat that cost them the top spot by a mere half point in the tiebreaks.
Both SLU and UTD will enjoy a first-round bye, setting the stage for a potential rematch of last year’s finals if they win their next matches. With all-grandmaster lineups, both teams are poised to dominate any matchup.
The Other Contenders
Claiming the third seed is the University of Missouri – Columbia (Mizzou), the fall 2024 champions. Despite a challenging season with a 4/7 record, Mizzou’s roster, led by GM Aryan Tari, remains a formidable force. With the ability to field multiple grandmasters, they are a team that can never be underestimated.
The fourth seed, SRM, made headlines by handing UTD their only defeat of the season. GM Pranesh M delivered an outstanding performance, finishing with a perfect 4-0 record. Their momentum heading into the playoffs could prove crucial.
Another strong contender is the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), who also secured four match victories. They stunned Mizzou with a decisive 3.5-0.5 victory in the final round, showcasing the talent of their GMs—Avila Santiago Pavas, Gleb Dudin, and Jose Cardoso—who all delivered crucial wins.
Rounding out the playoff teams is Texas Tech University. Although they lack a grandmaster, their roster of International Masters and a National Master has proven effective, with convincing victories over Lviv State University of Physical Culture and the University of Virginia.
Playoff Format
This weekend, the quarterfinal matches will unfold, with SRM facing UTRGV and Mizzou going up against Texas Tech. The winners of these matches will advance to the semifinals, where SLU and UTD await.
The Collegiate Chess League stands as the premier online chess competition for college students, and this year’s playoffs promise to deliver excitement and intense competition.
