Koneru Humpy Withdraws from 2026 Candidates Tournament Citing Safety Concerns

March 22, 2026 — In a significant turn of events, veteran Indian Grandmaster Koneru Humpy has officially announced her withdrawal from the upcoming 2026 Candidates Tournament, set to take place in Cyprus from March 28. Citing safety concerns amid escalating tensions in the region, Humpy described her decision as “painful but necessary.”

The Candidates Tournament is a prestigious event where the winner earns the right to challenge the reigning world champion. Humpy, a prominent figure in women’s chess, expressed her apprehensions on social media, stating, “No event, no matter how important, can come before personal safety and well-being. Despite the assurances provided, I do not feel fully secure under the current circumstances.”

Cyprus, while not directly in the war zone, has recently experienced heightened military activity, including a missile strike linked to the ongoing conflict between Iran and the US-Israel alliance. This backdrop has raised alarms among participants and organizers alike, prompting Humpy to reconsider her participation.

Humpy’s withdrawal leaves two Indian players, R Vaishali and Divya Deshmukh, to represent India in the eight-woman tournament. The event is particularly crucial as the winner will face off against Chinese Grandmaster Ju Wenjun for the women’s title.

FIDE, the global governing body for chess, confirmed Humpy’s withdrawal and announced that Ukrainian player Anna Muzychuk will take her place in the tournament. “Humpy Koneru (India) has officially withdrawn from the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament 2026,” FIDE stated. “In accordance with the tournament regulations, her place was offered to the next highest finisher in the Women’s Events Series 2024–25 who has not yet secured qualification.”

Humpy’s decision has sparked discussions within the chess community about the implications of safety in international sporting events, especially in regions experiencing geopolitical instability. As the tournament approaches, all eyes will be on the remaining contenders and the challenges they may face in Cyprus.

For now, Humpy’s focus remains on her safety and well-being, as she navigates this difficult chapter in her illustrious career.
