Sehba Shah: Overcoming Adversity to Lead Pakistan Women’s Chess Team at 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad

Sehba Shah, a 59-year-old woman from Pakistan, has defied all odds to become the country’s Women’s Chess Champion. Overcoming a severe physical handicap due to progressive muscular dystrophy, Shah has shown incredible determination and passion for the game of chess.

Now, Shah is set to lead the national team at the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary, from September 10-23. This event is not just about top grandmasters competing for glory, but also about showcasing the universal appeal of chess and providing smaller nations with a platform to shine.

Despite her physical limitations, Shah dominated the national women’s chess championship, scoring an impressive 6.5 points out of seven rounds. With the help of assistants who move the pieces for her, she was able to showcase her skills and love for the game.

Shah’s journey in chess began at a young age, inspired by the historic 1972 World Chess Championship match between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky. Despite facing challenges in finding teachers and support, Shah and her late brother Selman continued to pursue their passion for chess.

Her victory in the national championship has garnered attention in Pakistan, with the President of the Pakistan Chess Federation praising her remarkable achievement. Shah’s story serves as an inspiration to many, showing that with dedication and perseverance, one can overcome any obstacle.

As Shah prepares for the upcoming Chess Olympiad, she remains focused on improving her game and representing her country with pride. Her story of resilience and determination continues to inspire others, proving that age and physical limitations are no barriers to achieving greatness in the world of chess.
