Chanel’s Luxurious Chess Set: A $4 Million Masterpiece of Fashion and Artistry
Chanel Enters the Chess Arena with a Dazzling $4 Million Set
In a move that blends luxury fashion with the strategic world of chess, Chanel has unveiled an extraordinary chess set that is as much a work of art as it is a game. Three years in the making, this one-of-a-kind creation features an astonishing 9,000 diamonds, alongside gold and ceramic elements, making it a true statement piece for collectors and chess enthusiasts alike.
Each pawn on the board is intricately designed to reflect iconic symbols of the Chanel brand, including a lion and a mannequin bust, while the queens—representing the legendary Coco Chanel herself—are crafted from 18K white gold and adorned with 193 sparkling diamonds. Adding to its allure, the base of each queen conceals a secret watch that can be transformed into a stunning necklace.
The chess set was originally unveiled at the prestigious Watches and Wonders event in Geneva, where it captured the attention of luxury aficionados. Priced at a staggering $4 million, the set has already found a buyer in the UK, according to Chanel.
Frédéric Grangié, president of Chanel watches and fine jewellery, described the chess set as “by far the most complex project ever conducted at the manufacture.” He emphasized the precision required for each piece, noting that the craftsmanship surpassed even that of the brand’s renowned J12 watch. “The complexity of achieving a perfect shiny surface on each black pawn is more intricate than what you will find on a very complex watch,” he explained.
The chessboard itself features a representation of the Place Vendôme, the iconic Parisian square where Chanel has a boutique, symbolizing the rook. This blend of fashion and function showcases Chanel’s commitment to artistry and innovation.
In addition to this stunning chess set, Chanel recently announced supermodel Gisele Bündchen as the face of their J12 campaign, highlighting the brand’s ongoing evolution and connection to contemporary culture. “Gisèle Bündchen is a natural choice for this campaign,” Chanel stated, praising her authenticity and the balance of strength and softness she embodies.
Chanel’s influence extends beyond fashion, as the brand has also become the long-term sponsor and official timekeeper of The Boat Race, the historic rowing competition between Oxford and Cambridge.
With its latest foray into the world of chess, Chanel continues to redefine luxury, proving that the game of kings can indeed be played in style.
