Safety Concerns Loom Over Upcoming Chess Candidates Tournament in Cyprus: Players Voice Their Fears

Chess Community on Edge Over Candidates Tournament in Cyprus Amid Safety Concerns

NEW DELHI — As the highly anticipated Candidates tournament approaches, chess enthusiasts and players are expressing growing anxiety over the event’s location in Cyprus. The island’s proximity to escalating tensions in West Asia and recent attacks on nearby military installations have raised serious questions about the safety and basic facilities available for participants.

Prominent players have already voiced their concerns. Indian chess star Koneru Humpy made headlines by withdrawing from the Women’s Candidates tournament, citing safety issues. Meanwhile, American Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura has publicly questioned the reliability of the power supply, a critical concern for any major event.

Adding to the discourse, Dutch Grandmaster Anish Giri took to social media to express his frustration with the communication from the International Chess Federation (FIDE). After FIDE released a detailed FAQ addressing safety concerns, Giri quipped, “FIDE finally giving a FAQ!” Earlier, he humorously remarked, “If they will move the Candidates, will I at least get an SMS or something?” His comments underscore the players’ dissatisfaction with the lack of clear communication regarding the tournament’s logistics.

FIDE Responds to Safety Fears

In response to the mounting criticism, FIDE released a “Cyprus: Safety & Logistics FAQ” on Tuesday, aiming to reassure players and fans alike. The governing body emphasized that Cyprus is a safe destination, stating, “Yes. Cyprus is a safe country to travel,” and assured that there is no emergency situation affecting the island. FIDE claims to be collaborating closely with local authorities to ensure a secure environment for players, media, and guests.

Concerns Over Power and Backup Plans

Another significant issue raised by Nakamura pertains to the potential for power outages during matches. FIDE addressed these concerns, asserting, “No. The risk is extremely low and overstated.” The organization explained that power outages are rare and typically brief, with the tournament venue equipped with backup generators to mitigate any disruptions.

To further alleviate fears, FIDE confirmed that contingency plans are in place, ensuring that safety and comfort remain the top priorities should circumstances change.

As the chess world watches closely, the upcoming Candidates tournament in Cyprus stands at a crossroads, balancing the excitement of competition with the pressing need for safety and reliability. With players’ concerns echoing loudly, the chess community hopes for a resolution that prioritizes both the integrity of the game and the well-being of its participants.
