Chess Legend Vladimir Kramnik Suspended for Cheating Allegations Against Late Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky

Vladimir Kramnik Suspended for Cheating Allegations Against Late Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — In a shocking turn of events, the international governing body for chess has suspended former world champion Vladimir Kramnik for at least one year following his unsubstantiated allegations of cheating against fellow players, including the late Daniel Naroditsky. Naroditsky, a celebrated American grandmaster, tragically passed away last year at the age of 29.

Kramnik’s accusations, which he initially made last year and continued to propagate on social media, have drawn widespread criticism. The chess federation stated that Kramnik violated its rules against cyberbullying by publicly alleging cheating without “adequate evidentiary support.” This decision underscores the organization’s commitment to maintaining integrity within the sport, emphasizing that any claims of cheating must be substantiated through proper channels.

In a statement to The Associated Press, Kramnik expressed his intention to appeal the suspension, asserting, “I am absolutely confident that this unlawful verdict will ultimately be overturned.” He vowed to pursue all necessary avenues to restore his reputation, which he believes has been unjustly tarnished.

The chess federation’s representatives highlighted the serious implications of Kramnik’s actions, noting that he exposed identifiable players to “unjustified reputational harm” and undermined the safeguards established by the disciplinary framework. “Combating cheating is one of our priorities,” they stated, “but allegations must be addressed through our procedures and supported by appropriate evidence.”

Naroditsky, who was instrumental in popularizing chess through his educational YouTube videos and livestreams, had previously spoken about the emotional toll Kramnik’s allegations took on him. In his final livestream before his untimely death, he remarked, “Ever since the Kramnik stuff, I feel like if I start doing well, people assume the worst of intentions.”

The young grandmaster was found dead in his North Carolina home in October, with a toxicology report revealing that an abnormal heartbeat caused by an accidental overdose was the cause of death. Kramnik later referred to Naroditsky’s passing as a tragedy, claiming there was a “cynical campaign” to link him to the young player’s death without any factual basis.

As the chess community grapples with the fallout from this incident, Kramnik’s suspension serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accountability and evidence in maintaining the integrity of the game. The chess world watches closely as Kramnik prepares to appeal, and the implications of this case continue to unfold.
