ChessFest 2026: A Day of Strategy and Spectacle in Trafalgar Square

London, July 12, 2026 – Chess enthusiasts and curious newcomers alike are invited to join the excitement at ChessFest 2026, taking place from 12 PM to 7 PM in the iconic Trafalgar Square. Now in its sixth year, this grand celebration of chess promises a day filled with thrilling activities, expert demonstrations, and engaging performances, all under the theme of wildlife.

This year’s ChessFest will feature free chess lessons from experienced tutors provided by the Chess in Schools and Communities (CSC) program, making it the perfect opportunity for beginners to learn the game. For seasoned players, the event will showcase simultaneous displays by top Grandmasters, including the renowned Mickey Adams and Gawain Jones, who will challenge participants to test their skills against the best.

Attendees can also enjoy giant chess sets, speed chess matches in the “Challenge the Chess Master” tent, and a unique living chess experience where actors will reenact famous games on a massive board. The day will be filled with excitement as spectators watch chess masters battle it out in a giant blitz game, a true test of skill and stamina.

Adding a whimsical twist, this year’s theme invites participants to witness a showdown between a kingfisher and a queen bee, alongside the thrilling spectacle of a butterfly pawn facing off against a hedgehog pawn. “Only at ChessFest 2026!” organizers exclaim, promising a day of fun and creativity.

For those looking to sharpen their skills, a video course featuring chess experts such as Dorian Rogozenco and Mihail Marin will delve into the legendary games of Boris Spassky, providing insights into his strategic openings and middlegame strengths.

A Historic Celebration

This year’s ChessFest also marks the 175th anniversary of the Immortal Game, played by German chess master Adolf Anderssen in 1851. Attendees will have the chance to see this historic match reenacted by the living chess set, just a stone’s throw from Simpson’s-in-the-Strand, where the original game took place.

Join the Fun!

With over 20,000 expected attendees, ChessFest 2026 is designed for chess lovers of all ages and skill levels. Schools are encouraged to include event flyers in newsletters, while chess clubs are invited to share details with their members. Everyone is welcome to spread the word on social media and invite friends and family to join the festivities.

No prior chess experience? No problem! Free individual and group lessons will be available throughout the day, ensuring that everyone can participate in the fun.
