JAKARTA – In a stunning turn of events, Indonesian chess player Chelsie Monica has made headlines by defeating the world’s top-ranked chess player, Magnus Carlsen of Norway, during a simultaneous chess session in Hong Kong. This remarkable victory took place just ahead of the 2026 FIDE World Team Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships.

The event featured Carlsen playing against 24 different opponents, but it was Chelsie who stood out as the only player to claim victory against the five-time world champion. The match, conducted in a rapid chess format, showcased Chelsie’s skill and determination as she faced one of her idols.

“I’m so happy to have played against Magnus. It’s hard to put into words, but this victory means everything to me,” Chelsie expressed in an interview with ChessBase India.

Chelsie, who holds the title of Woman International Master (WIM), played with the black pieces, opting for the Italian Game—a favorite opening of hers. As the match progressed, tension filled the air, and with just five minutes remaining, Carlsen made the unexpected decision to resign. The moment came when Chelsie moved her black rook from C1 to H1, prompting a handshake from the legendary player.

“I was really nervous. He is the greatest chess player of all time and one of my idols. I just hoped not to lose quickly, so I focused on surviving as long as possible and got lucky,” Chelsie reflected on her experience.

Following her victory, Chelsie was visibly elated, covering her face with her hands in disbelief. The achievement marks a significant milestone in her career and has garnered attention not only in Indonesia but across the global chess community.

Magnus Carlsen, 35, is renowned for his impressive collection of titles, including six world championships in rapid chess and nine in blitz chess, in addition to his five classical titles. His unexpected defeat at the hands of Chelsie adds an exciting chapter to the ongoing narrative of chess, inspiring aspiring players around the world.

As the chess community eagerly anticipates the upcoming championships, Chelsie’s triumph serves as a reminder that in the world of chess, anything is possible.
