Speaking to The Hindu during an event at D.G. Vaishnav College, the 20-year-old prodigy expressed optimism about the team’s prospects, citing their strong bond and shared experience as crucial assets.

“The core of our team remains the same as last year’s winning campaign, with Nihal Sarin stepping in for P. Harikrishna,” Praggnanandhaa noted. “We are all very good friends, and that friendship plays a significant role in a team event like the Olympiad.”

As the defending champions, the pressure is palpable, but Praggnanandhaa reassured fans that the team is well-prepared to handle expectations. “There will always be pressure when you represent your country. It’s not just external pressure; it’s about the expectations we set for ourselves. We’ve experienced this before and are ready to face it again,” he said.

Addressing concerns over fellow Grandmaster D. Gukesh’s recent performances, Praggnanandhaa defended his teammate, highlighting Gukesh’s impressive achievements, including a gold board prize and a successful Olympiad campaign. “Everyone goes through rough patches. Gukesh has proven he belongs at the top, and I believe this is just one of those phases,” he remarked.

Looking ahead, Praggnanandhaa identified the home team Uzbekistan, featuring rising stars like Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Gukesh’s challenger Javokhir Sindarov, as formidable competitors in the upcoming Olympiad.
