Motorists baffled by stone chessboard installed in parking lot at taxpayers’ expense

The installation of a stone chessboard in a parking lot in Sherwood, Nottingham has left motorists and residents scratching their heads. The addition, part of a £17 million upgrade to car parks in Nottingham and Derby, has been met with confusion and criticism.

Local resident Philip Towell, who visited the site with his daughter, described the chessboard as “rubbish” and raised concerns about its safety. Others have questioned the logic of placing a chessboard in a noisy parking lot, with one resident calling it a “waste of money.”

Despite the backlash, Nottingham City Council defended the installation, stating that the chessboard could also be used as a general seating area for visitors to relax and have a cup of tea. The council emphasized that the project is experimental and will be evaluated based on public feedback.

While some have expressed skepticism about the usefulness of the chessboard, others have suggested that it could potentially be a unique and cost-effective addition to the parking lot. Only time will tell if the stone chessboard will become a popular spot for locals or remain an overlooked curiosity in the car park.
