Revamped Play Area at Jackie Bell’s Field Reopens in Netherfield

Netherfield, June 5, 2023 – A vibrant new chapter has begun for Jackie Bell’s Field, as the beloved play area officially reopened today following a stunning £98,000 makeover funded by FCC Communities Foundation. The grand unveiling was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by the Mayor of Gedling, local councillors, and project partners, who took a tour of the upgraded space.

Mayor Sandra Barnes expressed her excitement, stating she was “thrilled” to open the revitalized park, which promises to be a haven for local children. “This is a space that our community can truly enjoy,” she said.

The transformation features an array of new attractions, including state-of-the-art climbing equipment, a thrilling 25-metre zip line, and inclusive facilities such as a wheelchair-accessible roundabout and trampoline. Safety was a priority, with fresh surfacing added throughout the area. For those seeking a more leisurely experience, the park now boasts a table tennis table and outdoor chess, with equipment available for borrowing from the nearby St George Centre.

Cheryl Raynor, Grant Manager at FCC Communities Foundation, highlighted the importance of community input in shaping the project. “The new facilities will help build vibrant, inclusive environments that encourage play, wellbeing, and community pride,” she noted.

Pupils from Netherfield Primary School’s School Parliament played a pivotal role in designing the improvements and were among the first to test out the new equipment during the opening ceremony. Local teenagers also contributed to the project, with Nottinghamshire County Council’s Youth Service establishing a new group of “Park Guardians.” This initiative aims to foster pride in the space and mitigate anti-social behavior, making it the first scheme of its kind in a Gedling Borough park.

In a show of community spirit, contractors Wicksteed Leisure celebrated the opening by donating 50 book vouchers to Netherfield Primary School and contributing £50 to support youth activities at the park.

Councillor Alison Hunt expressed her delight at the park’s revitalization, thanking everyone involved in the project for ensuring its legacy for future generations. Meanwhile, Councillor Viv McCrossen, Portfolio Holder for Climate Change and Natural Habitat, praised the transformation as “a real asset to the borough,” emphasizing the modern facilities now available to residents.

Community members interested in supporting future improvements or caring for the park are encouraged to join the new Friends of Jackie Bell’s Field group by contacting friendsofjackiebells@gmail.com.

With its fresh look and enhanced facilities, Jackie Bell’s Field is set to become a cherished destination for families in Netherfield, fostering a sense of community and joy for years to come.
