CordenPharma Expands Peptide Manufacturing Capacity with AmbioPharm Acquisition Amid $1 Billion GLP-1 Investment
CordenPharma Expands Peptide Manufacturing with AmbioPharm Acquisition Amid $1 Billion GLP-1 Investment
In a bold move to enhance its peptide production capabilities, CordenPharma has announced the acquisition of U.S.-based peptide contractor AmbioPharm, further solidifying its position in the rapidly growing market for GLP-1-based therapies. The undisclosed deal will integrate AmbioPharm’s manufacturing facilities in South Carolina and Shanghai into CordenPharma’s existing operations, which already span Europe and North America.
This acquisition comes on the heels of CordenPharma’s ambitious plan to invest approximately $981 million over the next three years to bolster its GLP-1 peptide production capacity. The surge in demand for GLP-1 medications, particularly for diabetes and obesity treatments, has prompted the company to expand its infrastructure significantly.
AmbioPharm operates dual sites in the U.S. and China, employing around 400 people. The integration of these facilities is expected to enhance CordenPharma’s peptide platform, allowing the company to offer a diverse range of peptide synthesis approaches tailored to meet the specific needs of its clients. “This deal will provide our clients with flexible options for complex, long, and high-purity peptide active pharmaceutical ingredients (API),” stated a CordenPharma representative.
The addition of the Shanghai site marks a strategic entry into the Chinese market, complementing CordenPharma’s existing 11 sites across Europe and the U.S. This expansion not only strengthens the company’s global footprint but also positions it to deliver fully U.S.-based peptide API supply options for large-scale commercial projects.
Stateside, the acquisition of AmbioPharm’s facility will establish CordenPharma’s second peptide manufacturing plant in the U.S., joining its Boulder, Colorado site, which was acquired from Roche in 2011. This dual presence is expected to enhance the company’s ability to meet the growing demand for peptide-based therapies.
CordenPharma’s latest expansion efforts align with the booming market for GLP-1 therapies, driven by the success of medications like Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy and Eli Lilly’s Zepbound. The increasing interest in metabolic medicine has led to a wave of development activities, with companies like Viking Therapeutics already tapping into CordenPharma’s expanding capabilities. Viking Therapeutics has committed to a $150 million agreement with CordenPharma for the production of its dual GIP/GLP-1 agonist, VK2735, through 2028.
As CordenPharma continues to grow its peptide manufacturing capacity, the company remains focused on delivering innovative solutions to meet the evolving needs of the pharmaceutical industry. While the timeline for the completion of the AmbioPharm acquisition remains undisclosed, the implications of this strategic move are poised to resonate throughout the peptide manufacturing landscape.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as CordenPharma embarks on this significant expansion journey.
