D. Gukesh Apologizes to Fans Amidst Tough Tournament Performance
Prague, Czech Republic – In a heartfelt moment following his seventh-round game, Indian chess prodigy D. Gukesh expressed his apologies to fans, citing a challenging tournament as the reason for his recent struggles. Known for his engaging interactions with supporters, Gukesh’s decision to refrain from signing autographs this time around has raised eyebrows, but he reassured fans of his appreciation for their unwavering support.
“I really appreciate all the fans coming here every day. But I want to apologize to them—this tournament has been tough for me, and on some days, I just want to be left alone,” Gukesh shared in an interview with grandmaster Keti Tsatsalashvili. The 19-year-old acknowledged that his performance has not met expectations, admitting, “I’ve been playing badly here. The couple of chances I got, I didn’t use. So, what can I say? It’s been a bad tournament.”
Despite the setbacks, Gukesh remains committed to improving. He is currently in Prague with his coach, Grzegorz Gajewski, and is also working closely with mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton, who has been a significant source of support. “Having such people who understand what goes on in a sportsperson’s head is really quite nice,” he noted.
Gukesh’s resilience is well-known in the chess community, with commentator Alojzije Jankovic describing him as one of the best defensive players in the game. Reflecting on his strengths, Gukesh remarked, “Being resilient, fighting in bad positions… it’s one of my strong suits, but here nothing really worked.”
