In a remarkable celebration of talent and achievement, D Gukesh, the youngest-ever world chess champion, was honored with the prestigious ‘Titan of the Year’ award by Titan Company in Mumbai on February 6. The event also marked the unveiling of a limited-edition Titan Grandmaster watch, a tribute to Gukesh’s extraordinary journey in the world of chess.

Gukesh made headlines in late 2024 when he became the youngest world chess champion at just 18 years old, defeating reigning champion Ding Liren. His victory not only etched his name in history but also made him the second Indian to claim the world title, following the legendary Viswanathan Anand.

The award ceremony celebrated Gukesh as the second recipient of the ‘Titan of the Year’ honor, following last year’s award to Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian in space. Titan’s tribute to Gukesh included a special message highlighting his calm demeanor and strategic brilliance. “Gukesh never rushed the moment. While others chased speed, he chose stillness. While the clock counted down, his clarity only grew sharper,” Titan wrote on X.

The Titan Grandmaster watch, priced at Rs 69,995, features intricate chess-inspired details, including a Queen at 12 o’clock, a Rook at 9, a Bishop at 3, and a King at 6, with pawns marking the remaining hours. The watch’s dial is also adorned with a chessboard motif, symbolizing Gukesh’s mastery of the game.

Despite a mixed performance in 2025 and a challenging start to 2026 at the Tata Steel Chess Masters, Gukesh remains focused on defending his world title later this year. The upcoming Candidates Tournament will determine his challenger, with compatriot R Praggnanandhaa among the eight contenders vying for the opportunity.

As Gukesh continues to navigate the pressures of being a world champion, his recognition as ‘Titan of the Year’ serves as a reminder of his remarkable achievements and the bright future that lies ahead in the world of chess.
