D Gukesh Faces Setback at Menorca Masters 2026 with Loss to Nihal Sarin

Menorca, Spain – In a surprising turn of events at the Menorca Masters 2026, reigning world chess champion D Gukesh suffered a disappointing defeat against fellow Indian Grandmaster Nihal Sarin in the third round. This match marked Gukesh’s first loss in the tournament, following two draws against Leinier Dominguez Perez and Ruslan Ponomariov.

The 19-year-old Gukesh, who recently announced a significant restructuring of his tournament schedule for 2026, had hoped to regain his form after a string of underwhelming performances. Since clinching the World Chess Championship title in December 2024, Gukesh has struggled to secure victories in major tournaments, prompting him to take a step back and focus on training and recovery.

On March 31, Gukesh took to social media to express his frustrations, stating, “My performance in the last few events has been quite disappointing, not just for me, but for all of you who support me.” He explained that he would be reducing his tournament commitments to allow for more focused training, specifically opting to participate in only two European Rapid & Blitz events this year.

Despite his recent struggles, Gukesh decided to honor his commitment to the Menorca Masters, a prestigious six-player rapid invitational tournament. His journey began with a draw against Dominguez Perez, followed by another stalemate against Ponomariov. However, the match against Sarin proved to be a turning point, as Gukesh was forced to resign after 34 moves.

Sarin’s victory was marked by a series of sharp and tactical maneuvers that left Gukesh’s king trapped in the center of the board, with Sarin’s queen and bishop poised for a decisive attack. The chess community watched closely as the young prodigy showcased his skills, further solidifying his reputation as one of the rising stars in the chess world.

As Gukesh reflects on this setback, he remains committed to his training regimen and aims to bounce back in future competitions. The chess world will be watching closely to see how he adapts and responds in the coming months as he prepares to defend his title.
