D. Gukesh to Scale Back Tournament Schedule, Focus on Training Ahead of World Title Defense

In a surprising yet strategic move, India’s reigning World Chess Champion D. Gukesh has announced plans to significantly reduce his tournament commitments this year. Following a series of disappointing performances, the young prodigy has opted to participate in only two events of the Grand Chess Tour in 2026, prioritizing intensive training in preparation for his upcoming world title defense.

Gukesh, who made headlines after his stunning victory over Ding Liren in Singapore in 2024, has faced a challenging few months on the chessboard. As the top seed at the Chess World Cup held in India last November, he exited earlier than expected, a setback that was compounded by underwhelming finishes at both the World Rapid and Blitz Championships in December. His struggles continued at the Tata Steel Chess Tournament, where he placed 10th after tie-breaks, and he finished ninth at the Prague Chess Festival.

“My performance in the last few events has been quite disappointing, not just for me, but for all of you who support me,” Gukesh expressed candidly in a post on ‘X’. “In order to find my best form, my team and I have decided that I should compete with slightly less intensity over the next few months.”

The decision comes as Gukesh prepares to defend his world title, with his challenger yet to be determined. The FIDE Candidates Tournament currently underway in Cyprus will decide who will face him, as eight elite players vie for the coveted spot.

In a bid to streamline his schedule, Gukesh has requested the organizers of the Grand Chess Tour to limit his participation this season. “With this in mind, I approached the Grand Chess Tour organizers and asked to play only two European Rapid & Blitz events. They were very supportive and understanding,” he noted. Gukesh will compete in the Rapid & Blitz tournaments in Warsaw and Zagreb this year, while expressing gratitude for the organizers’ flexibility.

“I’m very grateful for their support. Respectfully, I am not planning to play any other events during the Grand Chess Tour schedule and will certainly be back for the full Grand Chess Tour in the future,” he added, signaling his commitment to returning stronger.

As Gukesh embarks on this focused training regimen, fans and chess enthusiasts alike will be watching closely, eager to see how the young champion rebounds and prepares for the challenges ahead.
