D Gukesh: World Champion Ready to Turn the Tide at Prague Chess Festival

D Gukesh: The World Champion Ready to Bounce Back at Prague Chess Festival

Prague, February 25, 2026 — Despite a challenging start to the year, reigning world chess champion D Gukesh has arrived in Prague with renewed optimism, eager to reclaim his form at the prestigious Prague International Chess Festival. The 19-year-old Grandmaster, who recently faced disappointment at the Tata Steel Chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee, is determined to turn the tide in a competitive field that includes notable players like Tata Steel champion Nodirbek Abdusattorov and German GM Vincent Keymer.

Gukesh’s performance at Tata Steel was a stark contrast to his near victory in the same event last year. This time, he finished ninth with a score of 6.5, a far cry from the top-five finish he had hoped for. However, the Chennai native remains undeterred, viewing the upcoming tournament as a crucial opportunity to sharpen his skills ahead of his world title defense later this year.

At a press conference prior to the festival, Gukesh exuded confidence, stating, “Since the last time I played in 2024, a lot has changed… Obviously, there are more expectations and more pressure since I became the world champion. But I’ve gotten used to it and I hopefully can show my training and skills.”

The Prague International Chess Festival marks a historic moment, as it is the first time in 95 years that a reigning World Chess Champion will play a classical game on the territory of the former Czechoslovakia. Gukesh is not only focused on the title but also on continuous improvement. “My general approach in every tournament is to give my 100 percent in every game that I play,” he emphasized.

When asked about potential opponents in the upcoming Candidates Tournament, Gukesh expressed a desire to face compatriot R Praggnanandhaa, highlighting the excitement of an all-Indian clash. “It would be great for the Indian fans,” he noted.

In addition to his competitive spirit, Gukesh also addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding cheating in chess, particularly comments made by former world champion Vladimir Kramnik. Gukesh expressed his disapproval of Kramnik’s unproven allegations against several players, advocating for a more harmonious environment in the chess community.

As the festival kicks off, all eyes will be on Gukesh as he aims to regain his footing and showcase his prowess on the board. With a blend of youthful enthusiasm and seasoned experience, the world champion is poised to make a significant impact in Prague.
