Tata Steel Chess India 2024: Abdusattorov Leads Open, Goryachkina, Lagno, and Vantika Lead Women’s Rapid

The 2024 Tata Steel Chess India Open Rapid is off to an exciting start in Kolkata, with GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov emerging as the sole leader after day one. Abdusattorov scored an impressive 2.5/3 by defeating GMs Vincent Keymer and Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu. Not far behind are GMs Magnus Carlsen, Wesley So, and Narayanan S.L., all trailing by just half a point.

In the Women’s Rapid event, GMs Aleksandra Goryachkina and Kateryna Lagno, along with IM Vantika Agrawal, are leading the pack with a score of 2/3. Goryachkina’s performance has been particularly noteworthy, as she managed to turn a seemingly lost position against GM Alexandra Kosteniuk into a victory.

The tournament, now in its fifth edition, has attracted top players from around the world, with the return of world number-one Magnus Carlsen adding to the excitement. Carlsen expressed his eagerness to test himself against the younger generation of players and engage with Indian chess fans.

With two more days of rapid chess followed by two days of blitz remaining, the competition is expected to intensify. Stay tuned for more updates as the 2024 Tata Steel Chess India event unfolds in Kolkata.
