The Return of a Champion: GM Ding Liren Reenters the Chess Arena

Chess World Buzzes as Former Champion Ding Liren Makes Triumphant Return

As the chess community remains captivated by the high-stakes drama of the FIDE Candidates Tournament, where Uzbekistan’s rising star GM Javokhir Sindarov is making headlines, another significant development is unfolding. Former World Champion GM Ding Liren is back on the chessboard, marking a highly anticipated return to over-the-board classical chess.

This month, Ding, who held the title of 17th World Champion from 2023 to 2024, is re-entering the competitive scene after a hiatus following his grueling title match. The pressure of defending his crown took a toll, prompting him to step away from the spotlight. Now, he is easing back into the game with a series of team events in his home country of China.

Ding has teamed up with notable players, including Women’s World Champion GM Ju Wenjun and three-time Chinese Champion GM Yu Yangyi, in the ongoing SCO Team Tournament. This low-key yet significant re-entry is less about headlines and more about regaining his competitive rhythm.

In addition to his participation in team events, Ding has been spotted commentating on the Candidates Tournament on BiliBili, a popular social media platform in Southeast Asia. His compatriot GM Wei Yi is also representing China in the tournament, adding to the excitement surrounding the nation’s chess scene.

Looking ahead, Ding is set to represent his home province of Zhejiang in the Chinese Team Championship from April 19 to 27. This tournament will be particularly noteworthy, as it will mark his first classical games since he lifted the world title in 2024.

Ding’s return is significant for the chess community. Renowned for his natural talent, he reached a peak rating of 2816 and has an impressive track record, including victories at elite events like Tata Steel Chess and multiple Olympiad team golds with China. His remarkable unbeaten streak of 100 consecutive classical games is one of the longest in modern chess history, making his absence all the more felt.

In January, Ding was officially listed as inactive in classical chess by FIDE, having not played a single game in 2025. However, in a recent interview with Substack blogger Jonathan Zhi, he hinted at a comeback, igniting hopes among fans and players alike.

As Ding re-enters the competitive arena, questions abound: How sharp will he be? What new openings will he bring to the table? And perhaps most intriguingly, what version of Ding Liren are we about to witness?

With the chess world watching closely, Ding’s return promises to be a captivating chapter in the ongoing saga of competitive chess.
