Dubai Open Chess Championship kicks off with draws dominating first round

The Dubai Open Chess Championship kicked off with a bang as draws dominated the first round of the prestigious tournament. With over 160 players from 40 countries participating, both male and female chess enthusiasts showcased their skills in a battle of wits.

The tournament, now in its 24th edition, was officially opened by Khalid Ali bin Zayed Al Falasi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Dubai Chess Club. The event was graced by the presence of Abdul Karim Al Marzouqi, Secretary General of the Emirates Chess Federation, and other esteemed members of the club’s Board of Directors.

In the first round of the competition, top seeds faced off against formidable opponents, with some surprising results. Azerbaijani Timur Rajabov, the first seed in Category (A), had a tough match against Georgian Georgi Sebashvili, resulting in a draw. Meanwhile, Indian Raunak emerged victorious over Bangladeshi Manon in a closely contested battle.

Category (B) saw its fair share of upsets as well, with Indian Vanketic defeating the first seed Rajarishi in a thrilling match. Zambian Mulenga, the second seed, also secured a win against Indian Safin, showcasing his prowess on the chessboard.

The tournament, held in a Swiss system format with 9 rounds, promises to be an exciting affair for chess enthusiasts and spectators alike. With a match time of 90 minutes and 30 seconds added for each move, players will have to strategize and think on their feet to outwit their opponents.
