On July 28, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) will pay tribute to the legendary artist Marcel Duchamp, a pivotal figure in the Dada movement, with a unique chess event in honor of what would have been his 139th birthday. Known for his unconventional approach to art and his unexpected pivot to chess, Duchamp’s legacy continues to inspire and intrigue.
Duchamp, who famously declared his departure from the art world to focus on chess, will be celebrated through a simultaneous exhibition (simul) featuring renowned grandmaster Susan Polgar. In a remarkable display of skill, Polgar will face off against 50 participants from the art community, including artists and historians, all playing on separate boards at the same time.
While many of Duchamp’s art-world opponents may not be seasoned chess players, the event aims to recreate a similar simul held at MoMA in 1974 during Duchamp’s first retrospective. Francis Naumann, a leading Duchamp scholar and former art dealer, is the driving force behind this homage, reflecting on Duchamp’s profound influence on both art and chess.
Duchamp, who passed away in 1968, remains a towering figure in contemporary art, known for his philosophical approach that challenged traditional notions of creativity. His early painting, “The Chess Game” (1910), captures the essence of his relationship with chess, depicting his brothers in deep concentration while their wives appear detached, highlighting the tension between art and life.
The event will not only celebrate Duchamp’s legacy but also explore the intersection of art and chess. Duchamp once remarked, “I have come to the conclusion that while not all artists are chess players, all chess players are artists,” emphasizing the artistic nature of the game.
As chess continues to gain popularity, especially among younger generations influenced by shows like “The Queen’s Gambit,” the MoMA simul promises to be a vibrant celebration of both Duchamp’s artistic vision and the strategic beauty of chess.
