Duolingo Expands Chess PvP Mode to Android, Enhancing Learning Through Play

October 2025 – Duolingo, the popular language-learning platform, is set to roll out its highly anticipated Chess Player-vs-Player (PvP) mode to Android users, following a successful launch on iOS at the end of last year. This innovative feature aims to make learning chess more accessible and engaging, particularly for beginners looking to sharpen their strategic thinking skills.

The PvP mode allows users to challenge real opponents in real-time, providing an interactive way to test their chess abilities. “By bringing it to Android, we can reach more users, especially in markets that prioritize mobile devices such as Indonesia,” said Irene Tong, Regional Marketing Manager for Southeast Asia. This expansion is expected to attract a diverse audience eager to learn the intricacies of chess.

Duolingo’s chess course is designed with a beginner-friendly approach, guiding users from the basics—such as understanding the movement of each piece—to more complex strategies through puzzles and mini-matches. The course is led by Oscar, the app’s virtual chess coach, who provides support and encouragement throughout the learning process.

Recognizing that playing against others can be intimidating for some, Duolingo has tailored the PvP experience to pair learners with opponents of equal skill levels. Users can easily access this feature by navigating to the Matches tab and selecting the “Play a Person” option.

In addition to the PvP mode, Duolingo is actively working on updates to enhance the chess learning experience. Upcoming features will include options for playing with friends, game review capabilities, and plans to expand the chess course to the web platform. Advanced content development is also on the horizon, promising to enrich the educational journey for users.

The Duolingo Chess course is available for free on Android devices and supports six languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese. With this latest update, Duolingo continues to innovate in the realm of gamified learning, making chess not just a game, but a valuable educational tool.
