Ecobank Partners with Nigeria Chess Federation for 2026 National Schools Team Chess Championship
LAGOS – In a bold move to invest in the future of young Nigerians, Ecobank has announced its partnership with the Nigeria Chess Federation to host the highly anticipated 2026 Ecobank National Schools Team Chess Championship. Scheduled for May 7 to May 8 in Lagos, this championship promises to be a significant event in the educational and sporting calendar.
At a press conference held on Wednesday, Mr. Adekunle Adewuyi, Head of Education, Faith-Based and Social Services at Ecobank, emphasized the bank’s commitment to youth development through education. “This initiative reflects our dedication to nurturing young minds,” he stated. “Chess is more than just a game; it cultivates critical thinking, discipline, and problem-solving skills essential for future leaders.”
The championship aims to prepare students not only for competitive play but also for leadership roles in their communities and workplaces. Adewuyi noted a remarkable increase in participation, with the number of students rising from 1,210 in 2024 to 1,830 from 360 schools in 2025. “We expect even more participants this year, thanks to the growing interest among schools and the support of our partners, including Schoolmate Nigeria,” he added.
Mr. Adeyinka Adewole, Vice President of the Nigeria Chess Federation, assured attendees that the federation would manage the technical aspects of the competition while Ecobank serves as the lead sponsor. “We have successfully handled the technical components of this championship for the past three years and are fully prepared for this edition,” he said, anticipating participation from about 150 primary and 150 secondary schools.
Highlighting the broader impact of chess, Adewole pointed out that winners from previous editions have gone on to represent Nigeria in international competitions. “Increased support can open more doors for young talents,” he remarked, also noting the employment potential within the chess community. “Skilled players can work as instructors or serve as tournament officials, creating valuable job opportunities.”
Mr. Ambesh Kumar, Marketing Head of Schoolmate Nigeria, echoed these sentiments, stating that the partnership aims to foster youth development through education and sport. “Chess helps children build discipline, focus, and strategic thinking,” he said, adding that the initiative aligns with efforts to nurture future champions.
As the championship continues to grow, it serves as a vital platform for discovering young talents across Nigeria, helping students build confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills. With Ecobank’s commitment and the Nigeria Chess Federation’s expertise, the 2026 Ecobank National Schools Team Chess Championship is set to be a landmark event in the journey of young Nigerian chess players.
