GUWAHATI: The vibrant atmosphere of competition and camaraderie filled the air as the Northeast Regional Chess and Yoga Meet unfolded at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) Rangia in Kamrup from April 26 to 28. This three-day event brought together over 260 talented students from more than 100 JNVs across the Northeast, showcasing their skills in both mental and physical disciplines.
The Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti Shillong Region Chess & Yoga Meet 2026 featured an array of competitions designed to test concentration, strategy, and physical fitness. Chess matches were held across six categories: Under-14, Under-17, and Under-19 for both boys and girls, while yoga events included individual, artistic pair, rhythmic pair, and group performances.
The meet was inaugurated by Sister B. D’Costa, Principal of Fatima Convent English School, Rangia, who emphasized the dual benefits of chess and yoga. “Chess sharpens the mind while yoga strengthens the body,” she stated, urging students to embrace discipline and fair play throughout the competition.
The event kicked off with a colorful march-past featuring contingents from all 106 participating schools, followed by an oath-taking ceremony and a captivating yoga demonstration by the host school. Anjana, Principal of JNV Rangia, warmly welcomed attendees and officially declared the meet open, setting the stage for an exciting showcase of talent.
Competitions were conducted under the guidelines of the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) and the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, ensuring a fair and organized environment. “Trained arbiters and certified yoga judges ensured smooth conduct. The spirit of competition was high, yet marked by camaraderie and mutual respect among participants,” Anjana noted.
As the meet drew to a close, Mridusmita Borah, Co-District Commissioner of Rangia, graced the closing ceremony as the chief guest, with Seshanuj Sarkar, Principal of Kendriya Vidyalaya Rangia, serving as the guest of honour. The event featured a welcome song and a vibrant cultural performance, celebrating the diverse talents of the students.
In her address, Borah congratulated all participants, highlighting the importance of sports in fostering resilience and unity among youth. Medals, trophies, and certificates were awarded to top performers, with the overall championship trophies for chess and yoga also presented. The standout competitors will represent the Shillong Region at the upcoming NVS National Chess & Yoga Meet 2026, marking a significant milestone in their sporting journeys.
This year’s meet not only showcased the exceptional talent of young athletes but also reinforced the values of discipline, teamwork, and respect, leaving a lasting impact on all who participated.
