Exciting Updates on the Esports Nations Cup: Qualification and Wildcard Systems Revealed!
Esports Nations Cup Unveils Exciting Qualification and Wildcard Details for Chess Players
The Esports Foundation (EF) has announced thrilling new details regarding the qualification and wildcard systems for the inaugural Esports Nations Cup (ENC), set to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from November 2 to 29, 2026. This groundbreaking event will showcase players representing their countries across 16 esports titles, marking a significant shift from traditional team-based competitions like the Esports World Cup.
A Global Chess Arena
The ENC is expected to attract over 100,000 players from more than 150 nations, with chess being one of the key highlights. A total of 128 chess players will qualify for the event through three distinct pathways: 64 players will emerge from the Champions Chess Tour leaderboard (with a cap of one player per nation), 61 will qualify through regional tournaments, and three additional spots will be filled via wildcard entries.
The qualification process will take place from June 6 to 14, allowing an unlimited number of players from each nation to participate. However, only two players per nation will advance to the ENC Finals, ensuring a competitive yet inclusive environment.
Expanding Opportunities with Solidarity Slots
In a bid to enhance global representation, the ENC will also feature two Solidarity Slots specifically for chess. These slots are designed to provide opportunities for underrepresented countries and territories that have not qualified in more than one game title. Nations can apply for these slots from July 20 to August 17, and the organizers will select recipients based on competitive strength and regional representation.
Fabian Scheuermann, Chief Games Officer at EF, emphasized the importance of inclusivity in esports: “ENC is built around the idea that esports talent exists everywhere, and that more players should have the chance to chase the dream of representing their country on the world stage. The framework introduced today is about opening that door to more countries and communities, so more players can experience what it means to compete at the highest level of competition.”
Wildcard Support for Emerging Nations
The three wildcard spots will include two Solidarity Slots and one designated for the host region, ensuring that emerging esports nations have a chance to shine on this prestigious platform. Participants selected for these wildcard entries will receive full travel and accommodation support, further lowering barriers for aspiring players.
As the countdown to the ENC begins, the excitement is palpable among chess enthusiasts and esports fans alike. With its innovative qualification structure and commitment to inclusivity, the Esports Nations Cup promises to be a landmark event in the world of competitive gaming.
