Four Indian Grandmasters Set to Shine at Esports World Cup 2026 Chess Tournament
Paris, France – The chess world is abuzz with excitement as four Indian Grandmasters prepare to compete in the highly anticipated chess tournament at the Esports World Cup 2026, scheduled to take place in Paris from August 11 to 15. This year, Grandmasters Nihal Sarin, Aravindh Chithambaram, and Pranesh M will represent S8UL Esports, while Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi will compete under the banner of Gen.G Esports.
Nihal, Pranesh, and Arjun have secured their spots in the Group Stage through their impressive performances in the Champions Chess Tour (CCT) 2025-2026. Meanwhile, Aravindh earned his place through a stellar showing at DreamHack Atlanta and will kick off his campaign in the Play-In stage.
Last year, Nihal and Arjun were the only Indian representatives at the tournament, with Nihal making it to the quarterfinals and Arjun finishing an impressive fourth. Their return this year adds to the excitement, as they aim to elevate India’s standing in the global chess arena.
The 2026 edition promises to be a thrilling affair, featuring a formidable lineup that includes defending champion Magnus Carlsen from Team Liquid, along with chess titans Hikaru Nakamura and Alireza Firouzja from Team Falcons, Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Natus Vincere, and Hans Niemann from GodLike Esports.
The chess competition, returning after its successful debut last year, boasts a staggering prize pool of USD 1.5 million and introduces a revised two-phase format. The new Play-In stage will see nine players, who qualified through the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ) and DreamHack Atlanta, compete in a double-elimination bracket, with each match consisting of two games.
Top performers from the Play-In stage will advance to the Group Stage, joining players who qualified directly through the CCT and other events. The Group Stage will feature 16 players divided into two groups of eight, following a double-elimination format with two-game matches. The top four players from each group will then progress to the Playoffs.
The Playoffs will culminate in a single-elimination format, with quarterfinals featuring four-game matches, semifinals with six-game matches, and the final consisting of three sets.
