Four Indian Grandmasters Set to Battle at Esports World Cup 2026 Chess Tournament
Paris, August 7, 2026 – The stage is set for an exhilarating showdown as four Indian Grandmasters prepare to compete in the highly anticipated chess tournament at the Esports World Cup 2026, taking place in Paris from August 11 to 15.
Representing S8UL Esports, Grandmasters Nihal Sarin, Aravindh Chithambaram, and Pranesh M will be joined by Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi, who will compete under the banner of Gen.G Esports. This year’s tournament promises to be a thrilling spectacle, with a prize pool of USD 1.5 million and a star-studded lineup of competitors.
Nihal, Pranesh, and Arjun have qualified directly for the Group Stage through the Champions Chess Tour (CCT) 2025-2026, while Aravindh earned his spot through a strong performance at DreamHack Atlanta, beginning his journey in the Play-In stage.
Last year, Nihal and Arjun were the only Indian representatives, with Nihal making it to the quarterfinals and Arjun finishing an impressive fourth. Their experience will be crucial as they face off against a formidable field that includes defending champion Magnus Carlsen from Team Liquid, along with renowned players like Hikaru Nakamura, Alireza Firouzja, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, and Hans Niemann.
The 2026 edition introduces a revised two-phase format. The Play-In stage, a new addition, will feature nine players who qualified through the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ) and DreamHack Atlanta. These competitors will engage in a double-elimination bracket, with each match consisting of two games. The top performers will advance to the Group Stage, joining those who qualified directly through the CCT and other events.
The Group Stage will consist of 16 players divided into two groups of eight, following a double-elimination format with two-game matches. The top four players from each group will then move on to the Playoffs, which will feature a single-elimination format with escalating match lengths.
