Nihal Sarin Secures Spot at Esports World Cup 2026

Mumbai, May 27, 2026 — In a remarkable achievement for Indian chess, Grandmaster Nihal Sarin, representing S8UL Esports, has officially qualified for the prestigious Chess main event at the Esports World Cup (EWC) 2026. This milestone comes as part of the Champions Chess Tour (CCT) 2025-2026 Leaderboard, making him one of only two Indian players, alongside teammate Aravindh Chithambaram, to secure a spot in the tournament thus far.

The CCT 2025-26 season featured two major events: the Speed Chess Championship (SCC) 2025 and the Chess.com Open (CCO) 2026. The top three players from each tournament earned direct qualification to the EWC, while those finishing between fifth and ninth in the SCC, along with participants in the CCO, accumulated points toward the CCT Leaderboard based on their performances.

In addition to these events, players could also earn points through the Titled Tuesday Grand Prix (TTGP) circuit, which was divided into Autumn, Winter, and Spring splits, each featuring 13 tournaments. Consistent performances across these events were crucial for leaderboard standings.

Nihal faced a narrow miss for direct qualification through the CCO, finishing fourth—just one spot shy of the coveted position. However, his performance earned him 100 vital leaderboard points. His journey continued with strong showings in the TTGP circuit, where he secured one point in the Autumn Split and four points in the Winter Split.

A standout second-place finish in the Spring Split proved pivotal, allowing him to accumulate 34 points and ultimately finish with a total of 139 points on the leaderboard, securing his berth at the EWC 2026. Last year, Nihal represented India at the EWC 2025 after qualifying through the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ), where he reached the quarterfinals before being eliminated by eventual champion Magnus Carlsen.

As anticipation builds for the EWC 2026, Nihal Sarin’s journey continues to inspire chess enthusiasts across the nation, showcasing the rising talent in Indian esports.
