Fenerbahce’s Cem Ciritci Criticizes Postponement of EuroLeague Game Against Olympiacos Due to Scheduling Conflicts
Fenerbahce Board Member Criticizes Postponement of EuroLeague Game Against Olympiacos
Istanbul, Turkey – Tensions are rising in the EuroLeague as Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul board member Cem Ciritci voiced strong objections to the recent postponement of the highly anticipated game against Olympiacos. The match, originally scheduled for last night, was called off due to adverse weather conditions, but Ciritci claims the decision was influenced by factors beyond fan safety.
In a statement released on Fenerbahce TV, Ciritci revealed that the club had proposed rescheduling the game for either Friday or Saturday. However, both suggestions were swiftly rejected. “We were informed that the game was canceled due to a security decision made by the Greek government,” Ciritci explained. “We immediately took action and consulted with all relevant authorities, proposing that the game be played tomorrow. This was rejected because teams from the same city cannot play on the same day.”
Ciritci further elaborated that their proposal for Saturday was also turned down due to a scheduling conflict with a domestic league game involving Olympiacos. “All our proposals were rejected in this way,” he lamented.
The Fenerbahce executive expressed frustration over the situation, emphasizing the effort and resources expended by the team to travel from Turkey for the match. “We came here to play basketball, but if they want to play chess, we are good at chess too,” he quipped, hinting at the complexities of navigating the EuroLeague’s scheduling rules.
Ciritci also pointed out that the weather conditions on the day of the postponed game were not significantly different from those expected for the upcoming Panathinaikos-Valencia match. “Tonight, there is a Panathinaikos-Valencia game. We are eagerly awaiting it. If that game goes ahead, it raises questions about the safety concerns that led to our game being postponed,” he stated.
In a bid to address the situation, Fenerbahce has submitted an official objection to the EuroLeague, arguing that the postponement was primarily due to a water leak in the Olympiacos arena rather than genuine safety concerns for fans.
As the EuroLeague season progresses, all eyes will be on the outcome of the Panathinaikos game tonight, which may serve as a critical indicator of how the league handles similar situations in the future. The Fenerbahce board remains committed to ensuring that their voice is heard in this ongoing saga, as they continue to advocate for fair treatment in the competitive landscape of European basketball.
