Sindarov Maintains Lead as Nakamura and Giri Settle for Draws in Round 12

In a dramatic Round 12 of the ongoing chess tournament, Open section leader Javokhir Sindarov extended his lead with a solid draw against Hikaru Nakamura, while Anish Giri’s missed opportunity against Wei Yi left him frustrated. The matches unfolded on Sunday, showcasing both strategic brilliance and the pressures of competitive play.

Sindarov, who entered the round with a commanding 9 points, opened with 1. d4, transitioning into a Catalan-style setup characterized by g3 and Bg2. Nakamura, known for his tactical prowess, opted for a solid theoretical line that allowed him to concede central space while securing the bishop pair. The game saw a flurry of exchanges between moves nine and 26, stripping the board of major attacking potential. By move 26, the players had traded queens and most minor pieces, leaving Sindarov with a slightly better king position but Nakamura’s bishops providing adequate compensation. With little room for advancement, the two grandmasters agreed to a draw after a series of piece shuffles, wrapping up the match in under 45 minutes.

Meanwhile, Giri faced Wei Yi in a match that promised much but ultimately delivered disappointment for the Dutch grandmaster. Giri dominated the mid-game, steering the match into a highly favorable endgame that seemed to guarantee him a full point. His strategic pressure forced Wei Yi into a defensive shell, but as the clock ticked down, the tide turned. Under severe time pressure, Giri faltered, failing to find the decisive blow. Instead of tightening his grip, a series of repetitive checks allowed Wei Yi to escape. By move 77, both players found themselves in a deadlock, leading Giri to settle for a frustrating draw via threefold repetition.

In other notable results, India’s R. Praggnanandhaa managed to draw against Andrey Esipenko, while Matthias Bluebaum held Fabiano Caruana to a stalemate.

As the tournament heads into a rest day on Monday, Sindarov will enjoy a two-point lead, setting the stage for an exciting finish in the coming rounds.
