The stage is set for one of the most anticipated chess events of the year, as the pairings for the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 were finalized in Cyprus on Friday. This prestigious tournament, scheduled from March 28 to April 16, will determine the challengers for both the World Championship and the Women’s World Championship titles.

With the playing schedule now confirmed, players are entering the final stretch of preparations, fine-tuning their opening repertoires and strategizing for their upcoming matches. Among the competitors, R. Praggnanandhaa stands out as the sole Indian representative in the Open section, ready to face off against formidable opponents.

One of the most exciting matchups will see Praggnanandhaa go head-to-head with Dutch grandmaster Anish Giri, both known for their meticulous preparation and resilience. This clash promises to be a highlight of the tournament, showcasing the skills of two of the best minds in chess.

In another thrilling encounter, young talents Javokhir Sindarov and Andrey Esipenko will face off, marking a significant moment for both players as they represent the future of chess. The excitement continues with German GM Matthias Bluebaum taking on Wei Yi, both making their debut appearances at the Candidates.

The tournament’s regulations ensure that players from the same federation compete against each other in the early rounds. In the women’s section, the draw has paired three Indian players, ensuring they will face off within the first three rounds. Notably, Chinese GM Zhu Jiner will open against former Women’s World Champion Tan Zhongyi, while Aleksandra Goryachkina will renew her rivalry with Kateryna Lagno.

The women’s tournament also features a compelling matchup between R Vaishali and Bibisara Assaubayeva, two of the youngest contenders, and a clash between veteran Koneru Humpy and newcomer Divya Deshmukh.

Both the FIDE Candidates Tournament and the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament will follow a double round-robin format, with each of the eight qualified players competing in 14 rounds. As the countdown to the tournament begins, chess enthusiasts around the world eagerly await the decisive battles that will unfold in Cyprus.

Stay tuned for updates as these elite players vie for the chance to challenge the reigning champions, D Gukesh and Ju Wenjun, later this year.
