FIDE in Advanced Talks with India and Singapore for Hosting World Chess Championship Match: D Gukesh vs Ding Liren

FIDE in Talks with India and Singapore to Host World Chess Championship Match

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) is currently in advanced talks with India and Singapore to host the World Chess Championship Match later this year. The championship match will feature reigning champion Ding Liren from China and the world’s youngest chess title challenger, 17-year-old Indian GM D. Gukesh.

According to GM Emil Sutovsky, CEO of FIDE, no formal bids have been received yet, but discussions with several countries are ongoing, with India and Singapore being in the most advanced stage. It is expected that more than one formal bid will be received for hosting the prestigious event.

Last month, the All-India Chess Federation (AICF) President Nitin Narang expressed interest in hosting the World Chess Title Match in India. The championship match consists of 14 games, with the player scoring 7.5 points or more declared as the winner. In case of a tie, tiebreak games will be played to determine the champion.

FIDE has called for bids from interested parties to host the World Chess Championship Match, scheduled between November 20 and December 15, 2024, with the last day for submission of bids being May 31, 2024. The event is expected to last up to 25 days with a minimum total budget of $85,00,000 and a minimum prize fund of $25,00,000.

Gukesh, currently ranked sixth in the Open category, is considered a slight favorite against Ding Liren, who is ranked seventh. Former women’s world champion GM Susan Polgar believes that Gukesh has a good chance of becoming the world champion, considering Liren’s lack of recent activity and peak form.
