Vaishali and Her Mother: A New Era for Women in Chess as FIDE Unveils 2028 Candidates Qualification System

In a groundbreaking move for the chess world, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) has announced a revamped qualification system for the 2028 FIDE Candidates Tournament and the Women’s Candidates Tournament. This change comes as a beacon of hope for aspiring players, including the talented Vaishali Rameshbabu, who is poised to make her mark in the upcoming 2026 Candidates Tournament alongside her mother, a steadfast supporter of her chess journey.

The new qualification framework, approved by FIDE’s Global Strategy Commission, aims to create a more equitable path for players to earn their spots in these prestigious tournaments. By shifting the focus from world rankings to performance in major events, FIDE is ensuring that talent and hard work are rewarded.

One of the most significant updates is the introduction of the Total Chess World Championship Tour for the 2026–2027 season, which will serve as a direct qualification route. The top two players from this tour will secure their places in the 2028 Candidates Tournament, a change that promises to invigorate competition and inspire players like Vaishali, who has already made waves in the chess community.

FIDE has also streamlined the qualification process by reducing the number of spots available through the World Cup. Starting in 2027, only the two finalists from both the Open and Women’s World Cups will qualify, a shift that emphasizes the importance of consistent high-level performance. Additionally, the removal of the rating-based qualification spot means that every player must now earn their place through their achievements in key tournaments such as the Grand Swiss, World Cup, and Women’s Grand Prix.

FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich expressed his commitment to evolving the qualification system, stating, “These changes have been carefully developed to make the qualification process more balanced, transparent, and performance-based.” He emphasized that the new pathways will reward sustained excellence, ensuring that the best players rise to the top.

As Vaishali prepares for the challenges ahead, her mother stands by her side, embodying the spirit of support and encouragement that is vital in the competitive world of chess. Together, they represent a new generation of female players who are breaking barriers and redefining the landscape of the game.

With the 2026 Candidates Tournament on the horizon, all eyes will be on Vaishali and her fellow competitors as they vie for a chance to challenge for the World Championship titles. The changes implemented by FIDE not only promise to enhance the competitive spirit of chess but also pave the way for future champions, ensuring that the game continues to grow and inspire players around the globe.
