FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championships Make Historic Debut in the United States

The FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championships are making history this year as they take place for the first time in the United States. The prestigious speed chess tournaments will be held on Wall Street in New York City, featuring a brand new format that includes a knockout round in the Blitz competition. From December 26-31, the world’s best chess players, including world number-one GM Magnus Carlsen, will gather in the Big Apple to compete for their share of the nearly $1.5 million prize fund and FIDE’s most prestigious titles for speed chess.

The event will kick off with the FIDE World Rapid Championship and FIDE Women’s World Rapid Championship on December 26, starting at 2:00 p.m. ET. The tournaments will feature a unique format across four championships held over six days, with a rest day on December 29. The Open tournaments will take place in the luxurious Cipriani Wall Street venue, while the Women’s tournaments will be held across the street at 48 Wall Street.

In addition to the traditional rapid format, the Blitz competition will introduce a new knockout component this year. After the Swiss rounds, the top-eight finishers will compete in a single-elimination knockout with matches of four games at each stage.

The lineup of players is star-studded, with reigning champions like Magnus Carlsen, Valentina Gunina, and Anastasia Bodnaruk headlining the event. Other notable players include former World Championship Challengers Fabiano Caruana, Ian Nepomniachtchi, and Boris Gelfand, as well as rising stars like Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Alireza Firouzja.

The Women’s tournaments will feature top players like Ju Wenjun, Tan Zhongyi, and Mariya Muzychuk, alongside former champions like Alexandra Kosteniuk and Zhu Chen. American players like Carissa Yip, Irina Krush, and Jennifer Yu will also be competing in the championships.

On December 29, a special event called the Wall Street Gambit will take place, bringing together chess and finance with keynote speakers, blitz games against legends like Magnus Carlsen, and networking opportunities for attendees. Tickets for the event start at $1,000, with VIP experiences available for $5,000.

With such a high-caliber lineup of players and a unique format, the FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championships promise to be an exciting and historic event for chess fans in the United States and around the world.
