Unique Chess Showdown: Firouzja Plays from Bed Against Sindarov in Super Chess Classic Round 5
Unique Chess Showdown: Bed-Ridden Firouzja Faces Sindarov in Super Chess Classic
Bucharest, Romania – May 18, 2023 – In a remarkable display of resilience and adaptability, Iranian-French Grandmaster Alireza Firouzja faced off against Uzbekistani GM Javokhir Sindarov in the fifth round of the Super Chess Classic, held at the Museum of the National Bank of Romania. However, this was no ordinary chess match; Firouzja played from the comfort of his hotel bed due to a recent injury.
The tournament, part of the ongoing Grand Chess Tour and the first in a Classical format, has already seen its share of excitement. But the unique circumstances surrounding this particular game captured the attention of chess enthusiasts worldwide. Instead of the traditional venue, the two grandmasters convened in a hotel room, with Firouzja clad in loungewear, while Sindarov opted for a more casual look, donning jeans and a formal shirt.
A Special Arrangement
Firouzja’s bed-bound participation was necessitated by an injury sustained during his third-round match against Anish Giri. Although it wasn’t a fracture, the injury forced him to withdraw from his fourth-round clash against world No. 3 Fabiano Caruana. Tournament organizers made special accommodations, allowing Firouzja to compete from his bed with the agreement of his opponent and in the presence of an arbiter.
“It was a hard game, of course. I was always under pressure,” Firouzja reflected after the match, which ended in a 58-move draw. “But it was interesting. I got some play at the end and some chances. But not easy also for black.”
The Spirit of Competition
Despite the discomfort, Firouzja expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue competing. “The organizers put in a lot of effort, and the players were nice to agree to this arrangement. Otherwise, I would have had to withdraw,” he said. “There is pain, but it’s okay. I have to get used to it because it will be a long time. Fortunately, chess is a game you can play lying down.”
The match against Sindarov was not the only draw of the day; all games in Round 5 ended without a decisive result. Indian GM R Praggnanandhaa and American GM Wesley So shook hands after 45 moves, further emphasizing the competitive nature of the round.
Standings Update
As the tournament progresses, German GM Vincent Keymer leads with 3.5 points, while Praggnanandhaa shares second place with Dutch GMs Anish Giri and Jorden van Foreest, each holding 3 points. Sindarov sits in joint fourth with 2 points, while Firouzja finds himself at the bottom of the standings with just 1 point.
As the Super Chess Classic continues, all eyes will be on Firouzja, whose determination to play despite adversity serves as an inspiring reminder of the spirit of competition in the world of chess.
