PARIS – Indian chess is poised for a historic showing at the upcoming Esports World Cup (EWC) 2026, with four Grandmasters ready to battle it out in the prestigious Chess tournament from August 11 to 15. This year marks the strongest-ever representation for India, as Grandmasters Nihal Sarin, Aravindh Chithambaram, and Pranesh M will compete under the banner of S8UL Esports, while Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi will represent Gen.G Esports.
The stakes are high, with a prize pool of USD 1.5 million (approximately INR 14.2 crore) up for grabs. Nihal, Pranesh, and Arjun secured their spots in the Group Stage through stellar performances in the Champions Chess Tour (CCT) 2025-2026. Meanwhile, Aravindh earned his place through DreamHack Atlanta earlier this year and will kick off his campaign in the Play-In stage.
This year’s participation is a significant leap for Indian chess, which saw only two representatives—Nihal and Arjun—compete last year. Nihal reached the quarterfinals after qualifying through the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ), while Arjun finished fourth after qualifying through the CCT. The doubling of Indian participants this year underscores the growing prowess of Indian chess on the global stage.
The Chess competition at EWC 2026 will feature a revamped two-phase format. The inaugural Play-In stage will see nine players, including those from the LCQ and DreamHack Atlanta, compete in a double-elimination bracket, with each match consisting of two games. The top performers will then advance to the Group Stage, joining players who qualified directly through the CCT and other events.
The Group Stage will consist of 16 players divided into two groups of eight, following a similar double-elimination format. The top four from each group will move on to the Playoffs, which will feature a single-elimination format with four-game matches in the quarterfinals and six-game matches in the semifinals. The Grand Final will determine the champion after a grueling contest over three sets.
This year’s tournament promises to be fiercely competitive, featuring a lineup of elite players, including defending champion Magnus Carlsen (Team Liquid), Hikaru Nakamura, Alireza Firouzja (Team Falcons), and Nodirbek Abdusattorov (Natus Vincere), among others.
With four Grandmasters in contention, India aims to build on last year’s achievements and vie for its first-ever EWC Chess title. As the countdown to the tournament begins, the chess community eagerly anticipates the thrilling matches that await in Paris.
