France Restricts Israeli Participation at Paris Defence Expo, Jerusalem Calls Move ‘Disgraceful’
In a controversial move, French authorities have barred Israel from participating in this month’s Eurosatory defence exhibition in Paris, denying the country the opportunity to host a national pavilion or send official government representatives. According to a report from the Times of Israel, citing Israel’s Defence Ministry, French officials will only permit Israeli defence companies to showcase air defence systems, explicitly prohibiting the display of offensive weapons.
The Israeli Defence Ministry has condemned the decision as “disgraceful,” accusing France of making “political and commercial calculations” that unfairly discriminate against Israel. The ministry argues that these restrictions violate established norms governing international defence exhibitions and are inconsistent with the principles of fairness and equality that France claims to uphold.
In its statement, the ministry defended Israeli offensive systems, asserting that they have proven effective against “terrorist organisations and regimes” that threaten both regional and global stability. This latest development comes amid escalating tensions between Jerusalem and Paris, particularly following Israel’s suspension of all defence procurement from France in April. This suspension was a response to what Israel described as French measures undermining its security, including restrictions on Israeli aircraft using French airspace for operations related to Iran.
Interestingly, this is not the first time French authorities have restricted Israeli participation in defence exhibitions. Earlier, they had initially banned Israeli defence firms from exhibiting at Eurosatory 2024 before reversing that decision. At the 2025 Paris Air Show, organisers reportedly placed black partition walls around Israeli exhibits that displayed offensive weapons systems, further highlighting the contentious nature of Israel’s participation in international defence events.
As the Eurosatory exhibition approaches, the implications of France’s decision are likely to resonate beyond the event itself, potentially straining diplomatic relations further and raising questions about the future of defence collaboration between the two nations.
With inputs from agencies, this ongoing saga underscores the complexities of international defence relations and the political undercurrents that often shape them.
