Oleksandr Bortnyk Claims Victory in Freestyle Friday Championship, Eyes World Title

February 20, 2026 – In a thrilling display of strategic prowess, Grandmaster Oleksandr Bortnyk triumphed in the latest edition of Chess.com’s Freestyle Friday Championship, securing his seventh title and inching closer to a coveted spot in the 2027 FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship. With the stakes raised by the recent announcement of the Freestyle Friday Championship, Bortnyk’s victory not only solidifies his status as a top contender but also brings him within one title of the legendary Hikaru Nakamura’s record of eight.

Bortnyk’s journey through the tournament was nothing short of spectacular. After five rounds, he stood shoulder to shoulder with fellow Grandmasters Alexey Sarana and Khuong Duy Dau, each boasting a perfect score. However, it was Bortnyk who surged ahead, achieving a flawless 6/6 after a pivotal victory against Dau, who missed a critical opportunity to turn the tide in his favor.

As the tournament progressed, Bortnyk continued to dominate, defeating Sarana and reaching an impressive 8/8 before the second break. His only remaining rival, Sina Movahed, faltered in the later rounds, allowing Bortnyk to clinch victory in the 10th round against Jan-Krzysztof Duda, further solidifying his lead.

Despite a challenging final round against Pranav Venkatesh, who fought valiantly to secure a tie for third place, Bortnyk’s earlier successes ensured he would finish atop the leaderboard with a remarkable score of 9.5 points.

Sarana, who rebounded from his loss to Bortnyk with three consecutive wins, finished in second place, while Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son claimed third. Alexandra Kosteniuk once again showcased her talent, earning the women’s prize for the second consecutive week.

Bortnyk’s victory not only earns him a $400 prize but also positions him as a formidable contender for future championships. As the chess community eagerly anticipates the next Freestyle Friday, all eyes will be on Bortnyk as he aims to break Nakamura’s record and secure his place in chess history.

Final Standings:

  1. Oleksandr Bortnyk – 9.5 points
  2. Alexey Sarana – 9 points
  3. Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son – 8.5 points
  4. Pranav Venkatesh – 8.5 points
