Magnus Carlsen Wins Inaugural Freestyle Friday Tournament – Final Standings and Prizes

The inaugural edition of Freestyle Friday on Chess.com saw some of the biggest names in chess battle it out for the title of champion. With 476 players participating, the competition was fierce from the start.

The two heavyweights, GMs Hikaru Nakamura and Magnus Carlsen, were among the top contenders. However, it was Carlsen who dominated the event, starting with a perfect score of nine points out of nine. In the end, he finished with 9.5 points, narrowly edging out GM Oleksandr Bortnyk on tiebreaks after a surprising upset in the final round.

The tournament also featured exciting matchups between top players like Nakamura, Carlsen, Hans Niemann, and Haik Martirosyan. The clash between Carlsen and Nakamura was highly anticipated, but Carlsen’s strong performance throughout the event secured his victory.

Despite facing some challenges in the later rounds, Carlsen’s impressive start and the performance of his opponents gave him the edge to claim the title. Nakamura secured third place, with GM Liem Le finishing fourth and IM Meri Arabidze taking home the women’s prize.

The event has quickly become a must-watch for players, spectators, and Freestyle/Chess960 enthusiasts alike.
