Kasparov Critiques Gukesh as Sindarov Shines in FIDE Candidates Tournament

Garry Kasparov Takes a Jab at Gukesh as Sindarov Dominates FIDE Candidates Tournament

Cyprus, April 11, 2026 — The chess world is abuzz as Uzbek Grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov showcases his prowess at the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament, establishing himself as the frontrunner for the World Chess Championship later this year. After a commanding performance in Round 10, Sindarov leads the standings with a two-point advantage over his closest competitor, Anish Giri, who has six points. American star Fabiano Caruana trails in third with five points.

In a surprising turn of events, Indian Grandmaster D. Gukesh, who has faced a challenging start to the year, has opted to withdraw from the full Grand Chess Tour (GCT) to focus on training. This decision follows a series of disappointing results, including lackluster performances at the Tata Steel Chess tournament and the Prague Masters. Sindarov has stepped in to replace Gukesh in the GCT, a move that has gained even more significance given his current dominance in the Candidates.

Adding fuel to the fire, former world champion Garry Kasparov took a subtle jab at Gukesh, remarking, “It’s quite ironic that Gukesh, who was overwhelmed and eventually asked to reduce his participation to a few events rather than the full tour, was replaced by Sindarov. It’s a smile of history!” Kasparov’s comments reflect the ongoing rivalry and the shifting dynamics in the chess community.

Sindarov remains undefeated in the Candidates, boasting six wins and four draws, including a recent victory over India’s R Praggnanandhaa. His next challenge will be against Caruana on April 11, followed by matches against world number two Hikaru Nakamura, Giri, and Wei Yi.

Meanwhile, Gukesh has begun to find his footing again, recently securing his first win at the Menorca Masters 2026 against compatriot Pentala Harikrishna after taking a break to recalibrate his strategy.

As the chess world watches closely, the stage is set for an exciting showdown in the upcoming World Chess Championship, with Sindarov emerging as a formidable contender and Gukesh aiming to reclaim his place among the elite.
