As the chess world gears up for the 11th edition of the Grand Chess Tour (GCT), legendary player Garry Kasparov has stepped forward to reaffirm the event’s significance. His support comes at a time when several top players, including Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura, are opting for the lucrative Esports World Cup instead.
“The Grand Chess Tour is entering its second decade, and it continues to captivate the chess community,” Kasparov stated. “With new players emerging and fresh rivalries forming, the excitement around the Tour remains palpable.”
One of the most anticipated matchups this season is between reigning world champion D. Gukesh and rising star Javokhir Sindarov. Kasparov highlighted their upcoming clash in Warsaw as a pivotal moment for fans. “Who would have imagined that Warsaw would host the first game between Sindarov and Gukesh? It’s a fortunate coincidence that underscores the GCT’s innovative spirit,” he remarked.
While Gukesh has chosen to focus on his preparation and will skip the classical events, he is still expected to participate in the rapid and blitz segments in Poland, adding to the intrigue.
In contrast, the GCT will be missing some of its marquee names. Nakamura confirmed that he, Carlsen, and Alireza Firouzja will prioritize the Esports World Cup, which boasts a staggering $1.5 million prize pool. “As far as I know, neither the EWC nor GCT has changed their dates. I’ll be playing in the EWC, and so will Alireza and Magnus,” Nakamura stated.
The Grand Chess Tour, featuring six events and a total prize fund of $2 million, kicks off on May 5 in Warsaw, setting the stage for a fascinating split in the chess calendar. As traditional chess faces competition from the burgeoning world of esports, the coming months promise to be a thrilling chapter for both formats.
