Aravindh Chitambaram Makes History as First Indian to Qualify for the 2026 Esports World Cup

Indian Grandmaster Aravindh Chitambaram Makes History by Qualifying for Esports World Cup

In a groundbreaking achievement for Indian chess, Grandmaster Aravindh Chitambaram has secured his spot at the prestigious Esports World Cup, set to take place in Riyadh later this year. Representing the Mumbai-based esports organization S8UL, Chitambaram clinched his qualification by triumphing at the Road to EWC qualifier held at DreamHack Atlanta.

The 26-year-old chess prodigy showcased remarkable skill and determination throughout the tournament. After advancing to the Upper Bracket semi-finals from Group B, he defeated formidable opponents including Kyler Raines, Justin Liang, Oleksander Bortnyk, and Christopher Woo. In a nail-biting semi-final match, Chitambaram edged past Woo with a score of 2-1, before overcoming Russian Grandmaster Alexey Sarana in the Upper Bracket Final.

The Grand Final saw Chitambaram and Sarana face off once more in a double-match format. In a thrilling conclusion, Chitambaram emerged victorious after winning the Armageddon decider, earning not only the coveted title but also a prize of $15,000.

Rising Stars: Nihal Sarin and Pranesh M in the Mix

Chitambaram’s success marks a significant milestone for Indian esports, but he is not alone in his quest for glory. Fellow S8UL teammates Nihal Sarin and Pranesh M are also vying for a chance to qualify for the Esports World Cup. A total of nine players will secure their spots through the Champions Chess Tour Leaderboard, where Sarin is currently in a strong position to qualify. Additionally, four players will earn their places through the Last Chance Qualifiers, with one final slot available via the India Rising event scheduled for July.

The Road Ahead

As the excitement builds for the Esports World Cup, the chess community is abuzz with anticipation. World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen has already qualified as the defending champion, while Indian No. 1 Arjun Erigaisi, representing Gen.G Esports, finished fourth in the previous tournament after a valiant effort.

Nihal Sarin, who reached the quarter-finals last year, is eager to improve upon his performance and make a deeper run this time around, should he secure his qualification.

Chitambaram’s historic achievement not only elevates his status in the chess world but also inspires a new generation of players in India. As the countdown to the Esports World Cup begins, all eyes will be on these talented individuals as they aim to make their mark on the global stage.
