Indian Grandmaster Aravindh Chithambaram Makes History at DreamHack Atlanta, Qualifies for Esports World Cup 2026

NEW DELHI: In a groundbreaking achievement for Indian chess, Grandmaster Aravindh Chithambaram has become the first Indian player to qualify for the Chess main event at the Esports World Cup (EWC) 2026. The 26-year-old secured his spot after an impressive performance at the Road to EWC qualifier held at DreamHack Atlanta.

Chithambaram showcased remarkable composure in the high-stakes rapid format, where players faced two 10-minute games without increments, followed by nail-biting Armageddon tiebreakers if necessary. The tournament featured a double-elimination format, with the top four players from each group advancing to the playoffs.

Emerging from Group B, Aravindh triumphed over formidable opponents including Kyler Raines, Justin Liang, Oleksander Bortnyk, and Christopher Woo. His journey continued as he defeated Woo 2-1 in the Upper Bracket semifinal, clinching victory in the Armageddon game after two intense draws. In the Upper Bracket final, he edged past Alexey Sarana with the same scoreline, securing his place in the grand final.

The championship match turned into a dramatic showdown as Sarana, coming from the Lower Bracket, took an early lead by winning the first two games. However, Chithambaram demonstrated his resilience, fighting back under immense pressure to claim the title with a decisive victory in the Armageddon game.

With this triumph, Aravindh not only earned a prize of USD 15,000 (approximately Rs 14 lakh) but also secured one of the eight confirmed spots for the EWC 2026 Chess main event, scheduled to take place from August 11 to 15, boasting a staggering prize pool of USD 1.5 million.

“Qualifying for the Esports World Cup this year is a very proud and exciting moment for me, especially with so many top players and organizations from around the world competing at the event,” Chithambaram expressed after his victory. “This particular format leaves very little room for error, as every decision matters when you are playing 10-minute games without increment against some of the strongest players in the world.”

He also extended his gratitude to the team at S8UL for their unwavering support and belief in him over the past year. “Their approach towards chess and nurturing Indian talent has been incredibly encouraging, and I am looking forward to representing the organization and giving my best at the main event,” he added.

Four Qualified Players from DreamHack Atlanta:
