In a significant move to elevate Goa’s status in the chess world, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant inaugurated the Goa Chess Academy on Thursday. This initiative, a collaboration between the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs, the Sports Authority of Goa, and the Goa Chess Association, aims to transform the state into a national chess powerhouse.

During the inauguration, CM Sawant also unveiled the official Goa Chess Jersey, symbolizing the government’s commitment to promoting chess across the state. “Our vision is to take chess to every corner of Goa,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of this strategic initiative in enhancing the state’s sports infrastructure.

Financial Support and Recognition

In a show of support for the chess community, the Chief Minister announced a total financial backing of Rs 25 lakh. This includes a Rs 20 lakh grant for the prestigious Manohar Parrikar Chess Tournament and a Rs 5 lakh cash award for Grandmaster Ethan Vaz, who was honored for his exceptional contributions to the game.

Future Vision and Expansion

The Goa Chess Academy is set to develop a robust pipeline of world-class coaches and players, with plans to establish training centers in every taluka and a dedicated academy in South Goa. CM Sawant highlighted that these initiatives are not just about chess; they align with the broader Fit India Movement, promoting both physical fitness and mental excellence.
