Elite Grandmasters Set to Compete at the Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz 2026

Caruana, Sindarov, and Keymer Lead Elite Field at Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz

Saint Louis, MO – The excitement is palpable as the Saint Louis Chess Club prepares to host the highly anticipated Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz, part of the 2026 Grand Chess Tour. From August 2 to 6, ten of the world’s top grandmasters will converge for a thrilling five-day competition, showcasing their skills in rapid and blitz formats.

This year marks the eleventh edition of the Grand Chess Tour, which features a mix of classical tournaments, rapid and blitz events, and the knockout-format GCT Finals. The Saint Louis event will kick off with nine rounds of rapid chess, followed by an intense eighteen rounds of blitz. The official program begins on July 31 and culminates on August 7.

Among the elite participants are seven regulars from the tour, including Fabiano Caruana, Javokhir Sindarov, and Vincent Keymer, all currently ranked within the world’s top ten. They will be joined by fellow grandmasters Wesley So, Anish Giri, Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu, and Jorden van Foreest. Notably, Sindarov is set to challenge Gukesh Dommaraju for the world title later this year, adding an extra layer of intrigue to his performance in Saint Louis.

The competition will also feature three wildcard entrants: seasoned players Leinier Dominguez and Levon Aronian, along with rising star Awonder Liang, rounding out the ten-player lineup. All seven tour regulars will remain in Saint Louis for the prestigious Sinquefield Cup, which begins on August 10.

The rapid section will be played in a single round-robin format over three days, with players facing off in three rounds each day. Each game will have a time control of 25 minutes plus a 10-second increment from move one, with results counting double towards the overall standings. A win will earn players two points, while a draw awards one point.

The blitz rounds will take place over the final two days, featuring a double round-robin format with nine rounds in each cycle. Players will compete under a time control of 5 minutes plus a 2-second increment, with standard scoring determining the overall winner.

As the tournament unfolds, tour points will be crucial for Caruana, Keymer, and So, who are all vying for one of the four coveted spots in the GCT Finals later this month. With the stakes high and the competition fierce, chess enthusiasts around the globe are eagerly anticipating the strategic battles that will unfold in Saint Louis.
