Karlsruhe, Germany – The excitement is palpable as the Grenke Chess Festival heats up, with Vincent Keymer and Hans Niemann emerging as the frontrunners in the Freestyle Open A. After five intense rounds, both players boast a perfect score of 5/5, setting the stage for a thrilling showdown in round six.

As the tournament unfolded, the competition intensified. After round three, nineteen players shared the lead, but that number dwindled to six after round four, and further narrowed to just two by round five. The upcoming clash between Keymer and Niemann promises to be a highlight of the festival.

Magnus Carlsen, the reigning world champion, remains a formidable contender, trailing closely with 4½ points. Carlsen’s impressive streak of twelve consecutive wins came to an end in round four when he was held to a draw by Amin Tabatabaei. The women’s field remains competitive, with nine players tied at 3½ points, as they vie for three qualifying spots in the FIDE Freestyle Chess Women’s World Championship 2027.
